MHSAA Update - June 17th

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear MHSAA Community,

Over the past 14 months, you have received dozens of emails and communication from the MHSAA as we have navigated the challenges of sports and COVID together. It appears we are at the doorstep of normalcy for school sports.

Effective on Tuesday, June 22, there are no longer any MDHHS COVID requirements or restrictions on testing, gatherings, groups, and face masks for any sports activity, both indoors and outdoors. The most significant change in today’s announcement from the Governor is indoor face masks are no longer required for anyone, including both vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals, effective on June 22.

This has been the most challenging and unique athletic school year in the nearly 100-year history of the MHSAA, and we wish to thank you for your support, help, and efforts as we were able to provide three seasons that all reached the finish line for our kids, coaches, and school communities together. This weekend, we are concluding our final three MHSAA Finals in baseball, softball, and soccer as this difficult yet rewarding year comes to a close.

Have an enjoyable and safe summer. We look forward to a much more normal August and beyond in 21-22.

Thanks again for your support of the MHSAA.

Winter Sports are BACK

Updated on 06/10/2022

MHSAA Winter update - January 14th

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear MHSAA Community,

The Representative Council met today and took action on two items including an updated winter calendar for the five “contact” winter sports as defined by the MDHHS along with an extension of the Previous Academic Credit Record waiver, allowing local school districts to determine the eligibility status for winter and spring sport athletes during 2020-21 just as was done for fall athletes earlier this year under the previous academic term rule waiver.

Know that we are seeking specific, sport-by-sport guidance in terms of defining what is, and what is not, allowed activity for “contact” winter sports from Jan. 16-Jan. 31.  We will share this information as soon as we receive it.  A virtual “roundtable” session has been scheduled by the MIAAA for tomorrow, Jan. 15 at 1pm, for athletic directors to connect with MHSAA staff to share information and answer questions.

Updated Winter Calendar for Basketball, Competitive Cheer, Ice Hockey and Wrestling:

The Council approved a plan for adjusting schedules for the five Winter “contact” sports which may begin non-contact practices on Jan. 16 but must delay any activities that involve physical contact between individuals until Feb. 1 per the recent update to the MDHHS epidemic plan.   The updated schedule for girls and boys basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling pushes Finals for those sports into late March or early April. The Council approved the following dates:

Girls Basketball
First non-contact practice: Jan. 16
First contact practice: Feb. 1
First contest: Feb. 4
Districts: March 22, 24, 26
Regionals: March 29, 31
Quarterfinals: April 5
Semifinals: April 7
Finals: April 9

Boys Basketball
First non-contact practice: Jan. 16
First contact practice: Feb. 1
First contest: Feb. 4
Districts: March 23, 25, 27
Regionals: March 30, April 1
Quarterfinals: April 6
Semifinals: April 8
Finals: April 10

Competitive Cheer
First non-contact practice: Jan. 16
First contact practice: Feb. 1
First contest: Feb. 8
Districts: March 15-20
Regionals: March 22-24
Finals: March 26-27

Ice Hockey
First non-contact practice: Jan. 16
First contact practice: Feb. 1
First contest: Feb. 1
Regionals: March 15-20
Quarterfinals: March 23
Semifinals: March 25-26
Finals: March 27

Wrestling
First non-contact practice: Jan. 16
First contact practice: Feb. 1
First contest: Feb. 8
Districts: March 15-20
Regionals: March 22-28
Team Finals: March 31
Individual Finals: April 2-3

Spring sports will continue with their traditional dates, with first practices March 15. With this updated schedule, the majority of Winter athletes will have completed their seasons by the end of March. The updated schedule does carry on through schools’ spring breaks – MHSAA research found that 63 percent of member schools have spring break the week of March 29-April 4, with the other 37 percent are on break from April 5-11.

Previous Academic Credit Record Waiver Extension:

The Council also approved an extension of the previous academic credit record waiver, allowing local school districts to determine the eligibility status for winter and spring sport athletes during 2020-21 just as was done for fall athletes earlier this year under the previous academic term rule waiver.  Note that the current academic credit record regulation (weekly or quarter grade checks as set by each school) has not changed and must be followed for all athletes, as under Regulation I, Section 8.  Here is the full text of the updated Previous Academic Credit waiver regulation along with further guidance.

Previous Academic Credit Record (Regulation I, Section 7): The MHSAA minimum eligibility requirement will continue to be waived for all sports played during the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. It is for each school to determine the eligibility criteria for students under the previous academic record rule. Schools may maintain the MHSAA minimum standard (66%), reduce the standard (e.g. 50%) or eliminate and/or modify it as they see fit so long as the policies are applied equally to all student-athletes without regard to athletic ability or potential. Students must continue to be enrolled in 66% of a full-time student course load. The current academic credit record regulation (weekly or quarter grade checks as set by each school) has not changed and must be followed, as under Regulation I, Section 8.

As in the past under existing regulations, schools have the option to issue incompletes and keep online courses open and consider a student determined to be ineligible to become eligible when a deficiency of credit is made up and posted to the transcript, or on the 61st school day if passing on the 60th day. MHSAA regulations have always accepted pass-fail credit as opposed to a letter grade or GPA, and that has not changed. The MHSAA minimum standard of the previous academic credit record regulation will reactivate for fall sports based on credit from the 2nd semester or 3rd trimester of 2020-21.

Connect with the MHSAA with questions or concerns.  Thank you.

MHSAA Winter update - January 13th

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear MHSAA Community,

With today’s press conference and public release of the MDHHS epidemic order effective as of Saturday, January 16, the following is information we know at this time.  With the Representative Council scheduled to meet tomorrow, Jan. 14, along with dozens of additional questions that have already reached us this afternoon, schools should expect additional information and further communication in the next few days.

Here is initial guidance to schools based on today’s announcement and release of the updated MDHHS order:

  • No changes have been made to the three remaining fall sports in the MDHHS pilot rapid testing program; since the updated order goes into effect on Saturday, the two fall non-contact sports of girls swimming & diving and volleyball must continue with testing this week.
  • Winter teams may continue with OUTDOOR conditioning activities through Friday, Jan. 15.

On Saturday, Jan. 16, the following changes go into effect for school sports:

  • The non-contact winter sport of swimming and diving- boys in the LP and both boys and girls in the UP- may begin practices on Jan. 16 and compete starting on Jan. 22.
  • The non-contact sports of bowling and gymnastics may begin practice on Jan. 16 and compete starting on Jan. 25.
  • The four winter contact sports as defined by MDHHS include basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling.  These four sports may begin indoor practices with no physical contact on Jan. 16.  There must be at least 6 feet of distance between each occupied workout station with spaces and activities set up to maintain 6 feet between all persons at all times.
  • Based on the order, the first day of competition would be on Feb. 1 for these 4 sports with new MHSAA tournament dates.  We will provide updated MHSAA tournament dates for these four winter sports by the end of this week.
  • The MHSAA will continue to actively advocate for an earlier start to competition and physical contact practices in these sports given the non-school sports activity within our state, and the school and non-school activity in our three bordering states, all include competition now in winter sports, including wrestling.
  • Spring sports and fall sports not involved in the MDHHS pilot testing program may begin indoor 4-player workouts and resume conditioning activities on Jan. 16.  Note that all of this out-of-season activity must be NON-PHYSICAL CONTACT work at this time.
  • Masks are required of all participants except when actively participating in swimming & diving and gymnastics.
  • School weight rooms are now open for lifting and conditioning with physical distancing and NO PHYSICAL CONTACT activities and masks being worn at all times.
  • Under this updated order, spectators for winter sports are limited to 100 persons, except for stadiums and arenas, which are capped at 250.  Note that bowling center capacity is limited to 25% of total occupancy set by the local fire marshal.

The Representative Council will be meeting tomorrow to address new calendar issues and other challenges that today’s MDHHS announcement created.  We will communicate with all schools following the meeting with more updated information.

Thank you.

Winter sports update - Dec 23

Updated on 06/10/2022

An update from the MHSAA regarding the re-start of winter sports:

Winter Sports Planning

Under current MDHHS emergency orders, winter practices may begin on Jan. 16.  The first day of competition is Friday, Jan. 22 for basketball, bowling, ice hockey, and boys swimming & diving. In competitive cheer, gymnastics, and wrestling, the first day of competition is Monday, Jan. 25.   Know that if current orders are amended that allow practice activity prior to Jan. 16, first days of practice and first days of competition would be moved up accordingly.  If current orders further delay activity beyond Jan. 16, the MHSAA staff and Representative Council will devise updated plans that address both winter and spring sports.  This flexible planning has been required of us all since June, and we will continue to advocate for all kids in all seasons with our continued goal of three seasons played to completion.  Remember that skiing is able to proceed now.

The season limits of competition remain unchanged for all winter sports, and the weekly limits of competition also remain unchanged in all sports except for these two modifications for 20-21 in ice hockey and wrestling. In ice hockey, teams may play two games on one non-school day a maximum of two times during the season.  When the two games/one day option is used, ice hockey teams could play 4 games (on three dates) in those two weeks.  For high school wrestling, teams and individuals are allowed two days of competition in a week.  Remember that all regular season wrestling competition is limited to 4 teams at a site (3 matches per student per day of competition).  For middle school wrestling, one day of competition in a week is allowed. Again, all regular season wrestling competition is limited to 4 teams at a site (3 matches per student per day of competition). Schools and/or leagues may elect to play fewer games or use fewer days of competitions

The following winter tournament dates are below for your scheduling purposes which assumes a Jan. 16 (or earlier) start to winter seasons.  Further delays beyond Jan. 16 would require changes to the dates below along with possible modifications to spring dates.

Boys and Girls Basketball
Girls Districts- March 8, 10, and 12; Boys Districts- March 9, 11 and 13
Girls Regionals- March 16 and 18; Boys Regionals on March 17 and 19

Boys QF, Semifinals and Finals- March 23 (QF), March 25 (Semifinals- 2 Sites), and March 27 (Finals)

Bowling
Finals- March 26-27
Regionals- March 19-20

Competitive Cheer
Finals- March 19-20
Regionals- March 13
Districts- March 5-6

Gymnastics

MHSAA - Fall Update

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear MHSAA Community,

MHSAA staff has been working diligently for months with the Governor’s office and health department officials on return to activity plans during the COVID pandemic.  On June 30, Governor Whitmer released the MI Safe Schools Roadmap and it tasked the MHSAA with creating and publishing the guidance for the reopening of school sports.  For the past eight weeks, staff has worked to fulfill this mandate and has published all materials at MHSAA.com.  During this process, the MHSAA has made certain that athletic guidance complies with all Executive Orders of the Governor.

Over the past two weeks, our staff has been in regular communication with the Governor’s office seeking further clarification and guidance on issues within the current Executive Orders as well as answers on the use of indoor school gyms and swimming pools in Regions 1-5 and 7.  Today, the Representative Council was ready to allow competition in all Regions of the state in boys soccergirls swimming & diving and volleyball but was not able to do so yet because of these unanswered questions. It is our hope that further guidance on these questions will reach the MHSAA within the coming week.  The MHSAA, the Representative Council and member schools are committed to following all current and future Executive Orders in keeping our athletic programs fully compliant with all orders and by following all safety precautions.

Based on these facts, the Representative Council approved the following items today, subject to current and future Executive Orders.

  1. Competition in boys soccergirls swimming & diving and volleyball in Regions 6 and 8 may begin as scheduled on August 21 with all published safety protocols being followed.  All individuals not in active participation (players in the game and officials) must wear a face covering at all times which includes substitutes, coaches, game workers/management, auxiliary or support personnel, medical personnel, media members and spectators.  School personnel, not contest officials, are responsible for face covering compliance. In Regions 6 and 8, the outdoor limitations are 25% of the venue capacity or 500, whichever is smaller and includes all persons (players, coaches, officials, game workers, medical personnel, media and spectators).  In Regions 6 and 8, the indoor gymnasium limitations are 25% of the venue capacity or 250 individuals, whichever is smaller, that again includes all persons.   Indoor pools in these two Regions are limited to 25% of the bather capacity for that pool.
  2. In Regions 1-5 and 7, competition in boys soccergirls swimming & diving and volleyball may begin upon the issuance of future Executive Order(s) permitting soccer competition and opening of indoor school facilities for volleyball and swimming competition.  Under current Executive Orders, these three sports in Regions 1-5 and 7 may continue to practice outdoors under published protocols but may not compete within these six Regions.  Schools could travel into Regions 6 and 8 and compete based on the guidance above.
  3. Beginning on Monday, August 24, out-of-season football is allowed 16 voluntary coach-player contact days (with more than four players) with helmets only until October 31.  Consistent with the Representative Council’s decision last week to move the football season from fall to spring, no competition or practice with students from other schools is allowed on any of the 16 voluntary coach-player contact days and this allowance is for practice sessions on-site at school facilities if the school permits with all stated safety protocols being followed.  The guidelines from the Acclimatization Week on August 10-16 shall be followed on all coach-player contact days used with all activity taking place outdoors. Non sport-specific conditioning continues to be permitted with all published safety protocols. The four-player rule resumes on November 1 for football.  The MHSAA has heard from numerous schools and individuals about the need for students to stay connected with school coaches for a variety of wellness and mental health reasons.  This allowance for football seeks to address that concern.
  4. Beginning on Tuesday, September 8, all spring sports are allowed 16 voluntary, out-of-season coach-player contact days (more than 4 players) until October 31.  No competition or practice with students from other schools is allowed on any of the 16 voluntary coach-player contact days; this allowance is for practice sessions on-site at school facilities if the school permits with all stated safety protocols being followed.  Non sport-specific conditioning continues to be permitted with all published safety protocols.  Guidance for spring sport contact days will be available on each sport’s home page at MHSAA.com by September 1.  These will be similar to the protocols used during the summer with all activity taking place outdoors. The four-player rule resumes on November 1 for spring sports.   The MHSAA has heard from numerous schools about the need for students to stay connected with school coaches for a variety of wellness and mental health reasons, especially for spring sports that lost entire seasons last spring.  This allowance for all spring sports seeks to address that concern.
  5. The four-player rule continues for winter sports following all published safety protocols.  This activity must take place outdoors, subject to current and future Executive Orders.
  6. Sideline cheer activities (practices and cheering for fall contests) are allowed until the preseason downtime for competitive cheer begins on October 25. Sideline cheer activities must follow the protocol of using face-coverings, physical distancing and no stunting which keeps this activity in the low-risk group.  This activity must take place outdoors, subject to current and future Executive Orders.
  7. MHSAA junior high/middle school regulations allow fall sports practices to begin on Monday, August 24 at school facilities if the school permits with all stated safety protocols being followed. Schools may proceed in all middle school sports except football this fall based on decisions of leagues and/or individual schools.
  8. Finally, the Council reaffirmed that MHSAA Handbook, Regulation II, Sections 9-11 limits a student to only one football season in a school year.  For example, if a student participates in fall football in a different state, that student would be ineligible for a second football season in the spring in Michigan even if an exception to the transfer rule were met.

We understand that some school districts may opt-out of fall sports.  If your fall teams do not intend to have a fall season, please alert the MHSAA.

The MHSAA will continue to keep schools informed with additional and updated information as we have throughout the COVID pandemic.

This email is being shared with member schools at 2:30 p.m.  It will be released to media and others at 2:45 p.m.  Please do not share with others until 2:45 p.m.

Thank you.

Fall Sports - MHSAA Update

Updated on 06/10/2022

Here is the latest update from the MHSAA regarding fall sports.  The Representative Council met to discuss fall sports.  Here is a summary of the action taken.

  • Approved a “phased-in” approach to fall athletics.
  • Eliminated scrimmages in all fall sports; the only occasions where students from different schools would be together is for official games, matches, meets, and competitions.
  • Finalized the fall sports guidance documents for the safe return to activity.  This guidance includes general information along with sport-specific directives for students, coaches, staff, officials, and media members.  Spectator guidance will be added once those numbers of individual limits are finalized by the Governor’s office.  These documents are posted at mhsaa.com on each sport page and comply with all Executive Orders from Governor Whitmer.
  • New competition limits in all fall sports were approved to limit the number of teams and individuals at any one competition site.  The concept is fall competition will take place as locally as possible with no large-scale events, invitations, or tournaments.  See the fall sport-specific guidance documents for these limits.
  • Allowed all low-risk sports to begin practice and competition as scheduled on August 12.  This includes golf, tennis, cross country, and swimming.  Swimming can begin indoor practice and competition once pools are opened with capacity limitations being followed.
  • Allowed moderate-risk sports of soccer and volleyball (pending the opening of school gyms) to begin practice as scheduled on August 12 but to delay competition.  Decisions on competition timelines (to start or to delay further) would be made on or by August 20.
  • Delayed the start of football practice with full player pads and equipment until Monday, August 17.  The week of August 10 shall only include practice sessions that consist of conditioning, physical training, and skill work but without player equipment other than helmets.  This week of acclimatization (August 10-16) is similar to the allowed summer activities with helmets, only, that have been ongoing since June.  Decisions on competition timelines (to start or to delay further) would be made on or by August 20.
