MHSAA Update - June 17th

Updated on 06/10/2022

Dear MHSAA Community,

Over the past 14 months, you have received dozens of emails and communication from the MHSAA as we have navigated the challenges of sports and COVID together. It appears we are at the doorstep of normalcy for school sports.

Effective on Tuesday, June 22, there are no longer any MDHHS COVID requirements or restrictions on testing, gatherings, groups, and face masks for any sports activity, both indoors and outdoors. The most significant change in today’s announcement from the Governor is indoor face masks are no longer required for anyone, including both vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals, effective on June 22.

This has been the most challenging and unique athletic school year in the nearly 100-year history of the MHSAA, and we wish to thank you for your support, help, and efforts as we were able to provide three seasons that all reached the finish line for our kids, coaches, and school communities together. This weekend, we are concluding our final three MHSAA Finals in baseball, softball, and soccer as this difficult yet rewarding year comes to a close.

Have an enjoyable and safe summer. We look forward to a much more normal August and beyond in 21-22.

Thanks again for your support of the MHSAA.

MHSAA Executive Director

Time will tell if Whitmore Lake’s run game can be as good as in 2019

Time will tell if Whitmore Lake’s run game can be as good as in 2019

By Greg Wickliffe |gwickliffe@mlive.com

WHITMORE LAKE – No team could stop Whitmore Lake’s rushing attack last season, but the jury will be out for the 2020 offense.

Last season, the Trojans rushed for more than 4,000 yards with running backs Logan Kurth and Evan Romeo each gaining more than 2,800 yards and 39 touchdowns combined.

With Romeo graduated and now-senior Kurth, rehabbing an injury, the Trojans will have to turn to some younger players to carry the load to start the season.

Luckily, they’ll have some experienced offensive linemen back to pave the way.

Whitmore Lake returns seniors Michael Corrie and Nelson Bartram and junior Alex Tanner to provide a strong nucleus in the trenches that the Trojans will use to improve on last year’s success that saw them go 8-3 and win their first playoff game since 2006.

But the Trojans won’t have veterans running the ball like last season. Instead, they’ll rely on sophomore quarterback Isaac Brady, sophomore running backs Thomas Reil and Jaskon Ellinger and junior Jackson Schmitz to produce as Kurth works his way back.

Still, Whitmore Lake coach Brian Boron said he’s confident the young backfield will have a chance to shine thanks to the offensive line.

“I feel good about the guys up front,” he said. "They’ll create opportunities for the guys in the backfield. Whether or not they’re tough enough or mature enough to finish runs like somebody like Evan Romeo, Evan Vaughan or Cole Henning did last year, those were senior players that we’re replacing with sophomores, so intuitively, it’s not the same.

“But the scheme is the same, the look should be the same, these kids ran some varsity action, they played a JV schedule, they should be pleasantly surprised because the guys in front of them will actually be able to block for them as opposed to their experience on the JV. I’m optimistic that that part of it is going to take care of itself.”

Corrie saw firsthand what a strong offensive line could do for a run-dominant team like the Trojans last year. The veteran lineman said the task will be for the upperclassmen to get the younger players up to speed.

“We just have the people that are returning from last year bring up the people that are coming up as quickly as possible and get everyone working together as one solid unit,” he said. “(It takes) a lot of communication and knowing what you have to do to get the yardage that you need to win.”

Kurth said it’ll be imperative that the team is a cohesive unit by the time they take the field against Sterling Heights Parkway Christian on Friday.

“Just keep working to make sure we have everything sound and ready to go,” he said.

Whether or not this year’s offense will be as dominant as last season’s remains to be seen, but Boron has confidence his o-line will help his backs rise to the occasion – in due time.

“In our situation, the (offensive) line has a lot of game experience,” Boron said. "It’s the same offense with a lot of the same calls. They actually are at a point where they want to get more progressive and start doing more of the advanced stuff and I’ve had to hold them back and say, ‘We’ve got to have everyone moving at the same speed.’

“I’ve got a very young backfield and we can’t just all go zero to 100, we’ve got to creep up gently.”

Governor Whitmer Signs Order Reopening Gyms and Pools, Permitting Organized Sports With Strict Safety Measures

MDHHS Guidance Strongly Recommends Against Contact Sports Resuming at this Time

LANSING, Mich. -- Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-176 reopening Michigan’s gyms and pools in those regions where they remain closed and allowing for organized sports practices and competitions to resume in those regions where they remain restricted, subject to strict protections meant to limit spread of the virus. Gyms and pools may begin to reopen on Wednesday, September 9. The governor also signed Executive Order 2020-175 outlining strict workplace safety measures gyms and pools must follow to protect people from the spread of COVID-19.

“Throughout this pandemic, we have followed the best science and data available to make decisions that will keep Michiganders safe, and our hard work is paying off. Today we are announcing the reopening of gyms and pools with strict safety measures in place to protect patrons and their families,” said Governor Whitmer. “I urge everyone who plans to hit the gym after these orders go into effect to take these precautions seriously and do everything in their power to protect themselves and their families. Be smart, and stay safe.”

“Individuals can now choose whether or not to play organized sports, and if they do choose to play, this order requires strict safety measures to reduce risk,” said Chief Medical Executive and MDHHS Chief Deputy for Health Dr. Joneigh Khaldun. “However, we know of 30 reported outbreaks involving athletic teams and facilities in August. Based on current data, contact sports create a high risk of COVID-19 transmission and MDHHS strongly recommends against participating in them at this time. We are not out of the woods yet. COVID-19 is still a very real threat to our families.”

“On behalf of the Michigan Fitness Club Association, we appreciate Governor Whitmer’s announcement regarding the re-opening of gyms and fitness centers,” said Alyssa Tushman, Vice Chair of the Michigan Fitness Club Association. “The health and safety of our members, staff, and the public in general is our top priority. We are well-prepared to ensure a safe, clean environment and we are excited to offer Michiganders the opportunity to resume their exercise routines. We look forward to working with Governor Whitmer and her administration to help build a healthy Michigan.”

Under Executive Order 2020-175, all gyms and pools that reopen must enforce strict safety measures. Gyms must require wearing of masks at all times, including times of exercise, configure workout stations or implement protocols to enable six feet of distance between individuals during exercise sessions, reduce class sizes to enable at least six feet of separation between individuals, provide equipment-cleaning products throughout the gym, and more.

Spectators for indoor organized sports are limited to the guests of the athletes with each athlete designating up to two guests. For outdoor sports competitions, the organizer of the competitions must either limit the audience to the guests of the participants with each athlete designating up to two guests, or limit total attendance to 100 people or fewer, including all participants like athletes, coaches, and staff.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) also released guidance today on organized sports. The document recommends against contact sports at this time, defined to mean those sports involving more than occasional and fleeting contact, including football, basketball, and soccer. It also cites the elevated risk associated with activities that involve “shouting, singing, or breathing forcefully,” and notes there have been 30 reported outbreaks associated with athletic clubs, teams, or athletic facilities. MDHHS’ guidance recommends mitigation measures organized sports teams may take to reduce the spread of COVID-19 during training, practices, and competitions. These recommendations include frequent hand washing, not letting players share towels, clothing, or other items they use to wipe their faces or hands, ensuring proper cleaning and disinfection of objects and equipment, prioritizing outdoor practice, and more.

“As we begin to start organized sports back up again, I urge school districts and athletic associations to do everything in their power to protect players, coaches, and staff. That means carefully following the guidelines released today by DHHS,” said Governor Whitmer. “Going forward, we will continue to work with health experts to assess the risk associated with business sectors that remain closed. For the health and safety of our families and frontline workers, it is crucial that we proceed thoughtfully and incrementally so we can measure the effects of today's actions before we take additional steps towards re-engagement."

“We are pleased with the opportunity to move forward. Our Association continues to work with a team from the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health to ensure the safety of approximately 90,000 players and 11,000 team officials,” said Thomas Faro, Executive Director of the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association. “We will continue these efforts through our return to play guidelines and in strict accordance with Governor Whitmer’s Executive Orders.”

Fall Sports - MHSAA Update

Updated on 06/10/2022

Here is the latest update from the MHSAA regarding fall sports.  The Representative Council met to discuss fall sports.  Here is a summary of the action taken.

  • Approved a “phased-in” approach to fall athletics.
  • Eliminated scrimmages in all fall sports; the only occasions where students from different schools would be together is for official games, matches, meets, and competitions.
  • Finalized the fall sports guidance documents for the safe return to activity.  This guidance includes general information along with sport-specific directives for students, coaches, staff, officials, and media members.  Spectator guidance will be added once those numbers of individual limits are finalized by the Governor’s office.  These documents are posted at mhsaa.com on each sport page and comply with all Executive Orders from Governor Whitmer.
  • New competition limits in all fall sports were approved to limit the number of teams and individuals at any one competition site.  The concept is fall competition will take place as locally as possible with no large-scale events, invitations, or tournaments.  See the fall sport-specific guidance documents for these limits.
  • Allowed all low-risk sports to begin practice and competition as scheduled on August 12.  This includes golf, tennis, cross country, and swimming.  Swimming can begin indoor practice and competition once pools are opened with capacity limitations being followed.
  • Allowed moderate-risk sports of soccer and volleyball (pending the opening of school gyms) to begin practice as scheduled on August 12 but to delay competition.  Decisions on competition timelines (to start or to delay further) would be made on or by August 20.
  • Delayed the start of football practice with full player pads and equipment until Monday, August 17.  The week of August 10 shall only include practice sessions that consist of conditioning, physical training, and skill work but without player equipment other than helmets.  This week of acclimatization (August 10-16) is similar to the allowed summer activities with helmets, only, that have been ongoing since June.  Decisions on competition timelines (to start or to delay further) would be made on or by August 20.
